The Truth Is Somewhere in Between
Our monthly theme of “Journey” ends with Willa Bernstein’s compelling story of her work in the area of police reform that dates back 13 years ago to the Mollen Commission in New York City. The need for oversight in calm times was not realized. The George Floyd crisis demanded institutional change but fear of change and giving up long held traditions leads people to resist change and label reformers like herself as trouble makers.

Speaker Bio: Willa Bernstein is a former government attorney with a background in criminal and civil rights law. Willa began her legal career at a Criminal Justice Act Panel law firm specializing in federal criminal defense. She also worked as a Manhattan Legal Aid attorney representing indigent clients in criminal court and later served as an Assistant State attorney general in the education, employment and criminal divisions of the New York State Attorney General's Office. She currently works on ballot access and campaign finance issues with The November Group, a NYC-based political consultant. Willa, her 2-year-old daughter, Eva, and her husband, Kevin, live in Southampton Village.
