The Mystic Chords of Memory
Speaker: John Andrews, Musician: Steven Skoldberg
Americans are sharply divided over the major political issues of our day. We tend to idealize a fictional past in which we were all united. The truth is that for most of our history we were as divided as we are today. Sometimes more so. As the Civil War loomed, the new president, Abraham Lincoln, used his inaugural speech to appeal to what united us in a last-ditch effort to avoid armed conflict. In that he failed. Many suggest that we are on the verge of a second Civil War now, and some even hope it will happen. How close to the cliff are we, and is there anything that people of faith can do to help pull us back from the edge?
