Southampton Village sister restaurants Red Bar Brasserie and Little Red closed for the season during the last week of September—raising some eyebrows, because both would typically remain open this time of year—and owner Kirk Basnight says he plans to reopen both in the spring for the 2019 season.
Little Red first opened its doors in 2011 on Jobs Lane, just next to Agawam Park—in a spot that was formerly Buckley’s Irish Pub and Featherstones—and has traditionally been a year-round restaurant. Red Bar opened in 1998 on Hampton Road and typically closed for a period during winter months.
Mr. Basnight previously co-owned both restaurants, plus Beacon in Sag Harbor, with fellow restaurateur David Loewenberg. They parted in 2015, with Mr. Basnight holding onto Red Bar and Little Red, and Mr. Loewenberg keeping Beacon.
Mr. Basnight said last week that he decided to close both restaurants for the season beginning in September because he is 53 years old and after more than two decades in the restaurant business, he needed a break. He also explained that, considering the seasonal slowdown of business in the winter, it makes sense.
Mr. Basnight’s restaurants also have a fairly new catering arm, Red Catering.
