The Amagansett Farmers Market will be vacant no more.
On Monday, the Amagansett Food Institute announced that it will operate the icon starting August 1, nearly eight months after the Peconic Land Trust opened up bids for a tenant. The AFI will transform the market into a retail food destination, according to a press release, as well as a community hub and gathering place, presenting local produce and other products made on the East End and within New York State.
“We are thrilled to be able to showcase the best of East End produce and food products,” said Kathleen Masters, executive director of AFI, “and look forward to working with the community to bring more awareness of local food and food related issues.”
Wölffer Estate Vineyard has much to celebrate this week, after smashing wine records across Long Island.
Mark Squires, a reviewer for Robert Parker’s “The Wine Advocate,” visited the vineyard in April as part of an East Coast wineries tour. His assessment of the Sagaponack vineyard’s wines included two 94-point ratings—one for Diosa Late Harvest 2012, the other for Descencia Botrytis Chardonnay 2012—beating out the highest score ever awarded to a Long Island wine by two points.
“Wölffer is one of the region’s flagships,” Mr. Squires wrote. “If I had to name a ‘short list’ of top wineries in the region, this would have to be on it, without requiring any thought. Under winemaker/partner Roman Roth and vineyard manager Rich Pisacano, this winery excels in making age-worthy, structured wines.”
“We’re very proud, not only of Mark’s kind words about Wölffer, but of his review of the region as a whole,” according to the vineyard’s website. “Long Island, Mark concludes, is focused very carefully and there are a lot of producers with track records who are making fine wines that age and perform at a high level. The wines have a classic feel. Their direction is clear. The focus on quality is evident.”
An additional shout-out goes to Stone Creek Inn in East Quogue, recently rated by Zagat as the “Best Restaurant in the Hamptons” with the “Best Wine List on Long Island.”
Following a performance by Ja Rule over Memorial Day weekend, the new Harbor restaurant in Montauk—under executive chef Roy Wohlars, formerly of Ruschmeyer’s, and owner Jamo Willis, who has a home in Amagansett—is getting in touch with its laid-back vibe, offering a take-out stand called Booby Trap that serves Greek fare, sandwiches and salads until 5 a.m.
Also new to “The End” is Manhattan transplant Lazy Point, which has partnered with Montauk’s Ciao By the Beach for “Lazy Point Saturdays at Ciao,” a unique cocktail bar serving artisanal drinks in an urban beach house setting every Saturday until Labor Day.
Juice Press has unveiled its expanded smoothie menu, which includes Chocolate Coffee Oatmeal, Cookies & Cream and Trophy Wife—sold exclusively in Southampton and Bridgehampton—as well as Hawaiian Healer and Advanced Berry Blend. Surf Lodge in Montauk is currently serving Aloha Daily Good Greens—powdered green juice in berry, chocolate and original blends—and Aloha Superfood Chocolate all summer. Additionally, Aloha Daily Good Greens are included in the complimentary breakfast boxes in each room.
