On the road again, just can’t wait to get on the road again.
For the past three or four articles I have spoken of missteps, restarts, working on striving for greatness and getting back on track to achieve my goals. Well, unless I want to start sounding like a broken record, my actions need to more closely follow my words.
Over the past couple of months I’ve had good days of dieting, managed stress well and have sat down at the end of certain days and felt, “yes that was a great day.”
Just as recently as this past Saturday I hopped out of bed early, grabbed my juice at The Juicy Naam in Sag Harbor and raced in for an earlier than planned 9:15 a.m. tasting. I set up the concession for the Jordan Haerter Memorial Fishing Tournament, while assisting my son 20 feet away as he competed in the snapper tournament and helping my daughter dish out some tart strawberry limeade. We served up some great food, all the while my son was able to walk away with a medal and an undying belief he is the greatest fisherman in Sag Harbor and my daughter gained the understanding of what it feels like to help at a great cause.
Afterward, I raced from Long Wharf to Trees Lane in Sagaponack to orchestrate what I felt was a flawless and delicious wedding feast. The bride and groom agreed.
Weak-minded or less than focused individuals could not have pulled off such a day. I entered into it with an internal time clock of what and where I needed to be at a certain time and then put my best foot forward to accomplish what was a satisfying and rewarding day.
The two constants then were apparent on Saturday: a focused plan, and the support of friends, family and coworkers. On that day, and on many others, the individuals with whom I am blessed to spend time showed me that if I have the focus, they will have my back.
My friend and colleague Sean did it by flipping an extra burger and pulling double duty at the concession at the fishing tournament so I could be with my son. My wonderful wife, Clare, helped our daughter Emma while cheering on our son, Harry, and making sure our precious little Juliet did not run right off the wharf in her excitement. My father baited hooks for Harry. Emma handled the cash box and made change at the concession.
At the wonderful wedding we catered, my staff of Caitlin, Javier, Alex, Kristen and the rest of the crew made my life easy. Their help and teamwork allowed me to just orchestrate, as I don’t think I had the energy to do much more.
Focus and support, focus and support. Those are the two things that will keep me on this road to healthy.
