Solar Tour Returns To The East End

authorDawn Watson on Sep 23, 2011

The “National Solar Tour & Green Buildings Open House” makes its way to the East End on Saturday, October 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Five East End homes, so far, will be on the tour this year. At press time, houses in Water Mill, East Hampton and Montauk will be on view. More solar-powered and green homes are being added daily to the annual tour.

Organized on Long Island by the non-profit Renewable Energy Long Island and nationally by the American Solar Energy Society, the free tour offers participants a chance to learn about solar and other forms of clean energy and energy efficiency directly from people in their community. Tour locations are planned all over the island, from the Hamptons to Hempstead.

The homes on view showcase solar electricity or other green building features, such as energy efficiency upgrades, geothermal heat, solar water heating and electric cars.

“The tour is your once-a-year chance to see solar and green building features in action and talk directly to homeowners about their experience,” said Renewable Energy Long Island’s Executive Director Gordian Raacke in a press release issued last week. “More than 4,000 Long Islanders have already installed solar systems and on October 1 you can find out if switching to solar and other clean energy sources would work for you.”

The self-guided tour is free but visitors need to obtain a free visitors pass to see a list of tour locations. For passes and additional information, visit RenewableEnergyLongIsland.org or call (631) 329-8888.

PSEG Long Island Marks Utility Scams Awareness Day

Scammers impersonating utility companies routinely target ratepayers, threatening them with immediate shutoff of their service if they don’t send money immediately. Some scammers will call, and others may even show up on doorsteps. In observance of Utility Scam Awareness Day last week, PSEG Long Island shared advice to help ratepayers avoid falling victim to common scams. “The theme of this year’s Utility Scam Awareness Day is ‘Anytime, Anyone, Anywhere,’ and we want all customers to stay vigilant against utility impostor scams,” said Lou DeBrino, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of customer operations. “It may be an advanced digital scam, an ... by Staff Writer
