LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton will open two new exhibits for the season on Friday, August 2.
The first is famed contemporary Chinese artist and political activist Ai Weiwei’s “Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads: Gold.” The 12-piece art installation is the gold patina-plated collector series of Mr. Weiwei’s internationally touring body of work. The exhibit—a lifelike reinterpretation and reexamination of the bronze zodiac animal heads that once surrounded the water clock fountain of the Yuanming Beijing imperial retreat—probes at questions of historical truth, authenticity and national treasure. The exhibit will remain on view at LongHouse through October 12 before continuing on its international tour.
The second exhibit, “RERUM ALTER NATURA,” or “The Other Nature of Things,” is by Havana sculptor and UNESCO prize-winning artist Yoan Capote. The collection features two bronze sculptures—one is reminiscent of a weather-worn piece of luggage and the other is a pair of trees uprooted and offered as communal seating for weary travelers—which center on the relationships between individuals and objects, the natural environment and the contemporary human experience. The artist will visit LongHouse during the August 2 opening to present his work in person.
The opening reception will be held on Friday, August 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. and will include a performance by the Voxare Quartet. For additional information, visit longhouse.org.
