August 29: Claire Stevenson has been riding in the Hampton Classic since she was 8 years old, but she grabbed the coveted blue, red and yellow tri-color ribbon for the first time when she piloted Worthy to the championship in the local hunter non-pro division on opening day. Stevenson, who turned 22 on Wednesdsay, is a Southampton resident and rides and trains with Heidi Earle at Firefly Farm in Bridgehampton. Stevenson didn’t know she was going to ride Worthy until Saturday, but the two made a great pair in the Anne Aspinall ring on Sunday afternoon, taking a first and a third in the over fences classes to earn the championship cooler.

October 23: East Hampton football head coach Steve Redlus warned his players leading up to its game at Mercy not to have an emotional letdown after a big win over Southampton that allowed the Bonackers to keep control of the Hamptons Cup. When Reggie Archer ran Mercy’s first offensive play of the game for a 57-yard touchdown, it looked as though the Bonackers might be ready to do just that. But East Hampton bounced back after that touchdown and grinded out a 34-13 victory.

The Lady Whalers did it in nail-biting fashion, winning their semifinal game over Whitney Point in a double-penalty shootout and clinching the title with just 32 seconds left in double overtime against Cazenovia. March 21: Since graduating from Southampton High School in 2004, Kurt Rist has spent his winters in Hawaii, living the dream of any serious surfer. But during the most recent cold months, he opted to forego tropical paradise for a decidedly different experience. On January 27. Rist caught what he says was the best wave of his life at renowned big wave surf spot Mullaghmore in County Sligo, Ireland. The ride, and more specifically subsequent photos and video of him on the wave, also earned Rist entry into the Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards. He chose the bottom position to start the third and final period, immediately scored an escape to trim the deficit to 4-3, and then put a lightning-quick move on Szymanski and pinned him with 31 seconds left on the clock to win the match at 106 pounds. Tanzman went on to win the Suffolk County championship the following week, earning him a spot in Hurricane wrestling history. September 29: The United States got off to a rough start in the 44th Walker Cup Match at the National Golf Links of America in Southampton. But boy did they ever make a comeback. The U.S. claimed seven of the 10 afternoon singles matches on Sunday to win the match, beating Great Britain and Ireland 17-9 on the course that hosted the inaugural Walker Cup in 1922. The Walker Cup is a biennial competition between the United States and Great Britain’s best amateur golfers. Strong play in the singles matches in particular was the key to success for the American team, which claimed 13 and 1/2 of the available 18 points in singles. The U.S. took back the cup after losing to Great Britain and Ireland overseas in 2011. The host team in the Walker Cup has won four of the last five matches. The visiting team has not won since 2001, when the U.S. lost on its own turf.
