Details Matter

North Haven Village residents will vote on Tuesday, June 21, for its mayor in the first contested contest in decades. The former mayor retired after many years of good service, and three candidates are seeking that office.

We had the opportunity to silently witness a Zoom debate among the candidates, courtesy of this paper. That debate is available online and should be seen by residents who wish to vote with a better understanding of who they are, and to have a better understanding of the issues.

Former Mayor Jeff Sander, and the three potential successors, are long-term residents and honorable members of the community. They all have valuable experience in commercial life, and as village trustees. They all have been generous with their time and talents, and I see no concern over ethics, only their style of getting things done.

Two current trustees are sparring with each other for mayor, which gets a bit contentious at times. Both have given good service as trustees.

A well-run community should be led by someone who is careful with details and procedures. A mayor overseeing a board of trustees must be careful with compliance and have respect for procedures.

Current village issues are significant. Public input is of critical importance with these issues, and our mayor must be willing and committed to seeking such information. Additionally, it is very important they have a record of following required procedures, being careful and not sloppy. This must be true whether it is the small or large details to be followed.

Please look for and watch the debate and vote. You may agree with me that Terie Diat is the more careful candidate who pays attention to details and seeks public opinions in order to develop effective improvements to this wonderful community. Important issues are right in front of us now, and several more are looming in the near future.

As a high-value village, North Haven should not let itself be vulnerable to the forces of exploitation by thinking we can leave well enough alone. We should work together as residents, with our board and a mayor who seeks and respects all opinions, and follows the rules and regulations, no matter how tedious they seem.
