Growing up in East Hampton, Ryan Struble always had a knack for surfing, swimming, and biking — some of the more popular outdoor activities the East End have to offer.
Now, he’s added e-biking to his repertoire.
Over the winter, Struble jumped on an opportunity to take over the lease of a 300-square-foot space at 575 Montauk Highway in Amagansett for a new business venture — The Hamptons Adventure Company. The new store, which opened its doors to the public on May 1, is the area’s first bike shop exclusively dedicated to electric bikes.

When Alvin Woods returned home on a late flight fr

When Alvin Woods returned home on a late flight from Baltimore into Islip’s MacArthur Airport on April 29, he was tired but buoyed by the gratifying experience of joining more than 40 other military veterans on a one-day trip to Washington, D.C., with Honor Flight Long Island.
Founded in 2007 by East Hampton resident Chris Cosich, who died in 2014, the nonprofit flies military veterans, free of charge, every year to the nation’s capital to visit monuments to the wars they served in.
It was an amazing day for Woods, an 81-year-old Vietnam veteran who lives in North Sea. He’d been to Washington many times in the past but had never visited the famous landmarks, like the Lincoln Memorial or the Vietnam War Memorial, and he said it was an incredibly moving experience.

A midnight fire destroyed the barn-like waterfront

A midnight fire destroyed the barn-like waterfront restaurant building that for years was home to Rick’s Crabby Cowboy Cafe on East Lake Drive in Montauk.
The fire at what is this year known as the restaurant Maison Close had fully engulfed the decades-old wooden building by the time Montauk Fire Department firefighters arrived on the scene early Friday morning, May 26, according to Edward Ecker Jr., a department spokesman.
t took firefighters more than three hours to extinguish the blaze, which was reported at 12:11 a.m. and wasn’t put out until after 4 a.m. Firefighters were called back to the scene twice more in the early morning as “hot spots” rekindled the rubble left behind.
Bulldozers leveled what was left of the structure Friday morning.

Elie Poremba is no stranger to pressure-packed sit

Elie Poremba is no stranger to pressure-packed situations on the golf course.
But Tuesday was different.
When she approached the 18th hole at Middle Island Country Club in Yaphank, with a one-stroke lead on the field in the Suffolk County Girls Golf Championship, she had a chance for the first time in her young career to win a tournament while representing her school, Southampton. It was an intense situation for a 13-year-old seventh grader, playing against girls who were older than her and had been there before.
And she delivered.
Poremba calmly sank a putt to make par and stave off teammate Ella Coady, a senior, and Sophia Corso of Smithtown East, becoming the youngest Mariner to ever win the title.

There is a moment a little more than halfway through a five-minute video put together by several students and staff at the Bridgehampton School where Ava Mack, a longtime teacher in the district, speaks about a longstanding tradition of a Thanksgiving luncheon for all students in grades pre-K through 12.
“I love the fact that in Bridgehampton, our administration still allows the friends, family and community to enjoy a lunch together,” she says. “Everybody does not do that. That is a wonderful thing and a beautiful privilege, and we need to be thankful.”
Mack’s words were a powerful way of summing up, in part, what makes the Bridgehampton School a special place, and according to her colleagues, was at least one of the reasons why the district took home the top prize in the K through eighth grade category in the Rural Schools Association of New York State student video contest.

“The show itself, called ‘Redefining Wonder’ is not your typical magic show,” Funk explained in a recent interview. “So I'm excited for the audience to experience what I've got in store for them.”
“My approach isn’t about bringing these big boxes or sequin dresses or anything freaky to the stage,” he said. “It's about taking my audience on a journey, which uses very minimal props. It's more about just all of us, collectively creating the impossible together… and it just leaves them all having a sense of something they can call their own in the show, because of the amount of interaction with the audience in the way that they help the impossible take place.”

Raclette is as endemic to the Valais Canton as a $1 slice to New Yorkers; as a bacon-egg-and-cheese to Long Islanders; as white linen shirts to Sag Harbor in July. Raclette was born out of the Swiss region. In the United States, outside of the occasional ski town, the dish is hard to come by.
Far from Switzerland’s après activities, Robin Mueller’s business, Hamptons Raclette, aims to bring the tradition home. He spent the bulk of his childhood in Switzerland and grew up on the dish.

As a scientist, Rosalind Franklin was driven from an early age to pursue a career in scientific research at a time when women were not exactly welcomed to the field. Still, she persisted, and her ground-breaking work very nearly won her a Nobel Prize in 1962 for helping to discover the structure of DNA.
Nearly.
In the end, that award would go to a team of her male colleagues at King’s College in London.
The story of Franklin’s experience, the race to crack the code of DNA and the heated competition to win the Nobel for it is the subject of the new musical “Double Helix,” by composer and playwright Madeline Myers, which will have its world premiere during a three-week run at Sag Harbor’s Bay Street Theater beginning in late May.

A new boutique, Annabel the Shop, has opened on Main Street in Sag Harbor. The creation of Annabel DeGroot, a 26-year-old from Bridgehampton, the shop features an eclectic mix of clothing and accessories, candles and glassware, and a smattering of coffee table photography and fashion books.
“I have 30 to 40 different brands in here,” said DeGroot. “I hand-picked everything myself.”
As a young shopkeeper, DeGroot said she had to build relationships with various suppliers “and convince them via email I was the real deal” in order to get them to ship their products to her.
“I have a lot of sustainable and small brands, a lot of women-owned brands, and a lot of stuff at slightly lower price points than you usually see in the Hamptons,” she said. “I wanted it to be more accessible for a wider range of shoppers

Helicopters heading for East Hampton Airport this summer will return to the air over Hampton Bays, Noyac and Sag Harbor after East Hampton Town officials and aviation interests agreed to return to a flight route that skirts the Peconic Bay shoreline between the Shinnecock Canal and the airport in Wainscott.
The return of the so-called “November route,” which had been deleted from preferred flight routes in 2022, was immediately decried by residents and officials from Southampton Town as once again pushing the burdens of East Hampton’s controversy-laden airport onto residents of the neighboring town who have no power to influence its operation — or existence.

East Hampton Town will try to spur private cellula

East Hampton Town will try to spur private cellular companies to add infrastructure that will spread consistent cellular service throughout the town, using a tailored combination of tall towers and lower “small cell” antennas mounted on utility poles, as outlined in the newly unveiled draft of the town’s new cellular infrastructure master plan.

Consultants said that the strategy laid out in the 80-page plan’s recommendations is intended to achieve complete cellular coverage across the town, with the minimum number of the tall monopoles between 100 and 140 feet in height.

In Sag Harbor School District, the vote on a $6 mi

In Sag Harbor School District, the vote on a $6 million bond and withdrawal of $3.425 million from capital reserves to purchase 4.13 acres on nearby Marsden Street failed by just 75 votes, with 1,081 yes votes and 1,156 no votes.
The budget passed, 1,619-570.
Proposition three, the establishment of a security and technology capital reserve fund, passed 1,559-622, and proposition four, a vote on appropriating funds for the Sag Harbor Historical Museum, passed 1,684-504.

School board president Sandi Kruel admitted after the final tally was announced that seeing the Marsden proposition go down was “heartbreaking.”

The return of a thick carpet of spongy goops of green algae nearly carpeting the surface of Town Pond in East Hampton Village has left officials and engineers scratching their heads about how to halt an issue they thought they had in hand.
The village has sent crews of rake-wielding workers in boats down to the pond at least once a week the last few weeks to rake out the slimy algae that collects on the surface of the small pond at the gateway to the village.
But within a few days of the pond being cleared, the surface is once again blotched with the floating puffs of slime as more billows up from the bottom.
“It’s quite frustrating,” Village Administrator Marcos Baladron said. “We have guys down there every week and it comes right back.”

East Hampton Town highway crews cordoned off the b

East Hampton Town highway crews cordoned off the bridge at the southwestern end of Cranberry Hole Road this week after a gaping hole opened in the pavement of the brigade, which has long been known to be in dangerously deteriorating condition.
Town Highway Superintendent Steve Lynch said the bridge will have to remain closed until the decking and pavement that span the Long Island Rail Road tracks below can be repaired. It could be months, he said.
“It’s going to be an inconvenience for residents, but it’s too dangerous,” he said. “There’s a hole in it that someone could fall through — it goes clear through to the railroad tracks.”

Joe Hayward’s relationship with his bike can best be described as feast or famine.
The 78-year-old Southampton resident freely admits that the bike spends most of its time in the basement — he does not ride it around his neighborhood, or go out for a long spin on the weekends; he does not use it for exercise.
But every once in awhile, he gets the urge to go on a real adventure, and when that happens, the bike is his constant companion.
Hayward’s most recent bout of wanderlust took him to southeast Asia. This past March, he rode his bike from Hanoi, Vietnam, south to Saigon, a 1,000-mile journey along Highway AH1.
It was not the first time Hayward made such a long distance trek on his bike.

Montauk resident Mark Ripolone was indicted on Wed

Montauk resident Mark Ripolone was indicted on Wednesday, May 3, on multiple counts of grand larceny and identify theft, accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from a payroll company and his customers’ bank accounts, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney announced last week.
Tierney said the 35-year-old stole nearly $400,000 over a three-year period.
Ripolone was the owner of a now-defunct food delivery service called 123 Delivery and a beach service company named Hampton Management Group Inc. that provided beach chair set-ups and decorations for special events, both based in Montauk.

Two years after the start of a top-to-bottom renov

Two years after the start of a top-to-bottom renovation project displaced Temple Adas Israel, the congregation returned to its synagogue on Atlantic Avenue in Sag Harbor on Friday, May 5, in a joyous procession from its temporary home in the First Presbyterian (Old Whalers’) Church.
During the procession, congregants carried each of Temple Adas Israel’s four Torahs, including two with special significance. One was given to the congregation by Theodore Roosevelt, which was carried by Jewish members of the Rough Riders who fought in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Another was loaned to the congregation by the Memorial Scrolls Trust, an organization that seeks to restore Torahs that were damaged during the Holocaust.

The Coast Grill, long a North Sea staple, will be transformed this month into Captain Jack’s on the Coast, a new establishment run by a young couple with roots that are both deep in the community and the restaurant trade.
Mike Soleau, whose parents, Bob and Donna Soleau, ran Sunwater’s Grill in Hampton Bays for many years, and Erin Reiser, whose parents, Jack and Linda Reiser, ran the Main Sail restaurant in Sag Harbor, have leased the space overlooking Wooley Pond on Noyac Road.
This week, they were busy sprucing up the dining room in time for a soft opening on May 20, although they have encouraged passersby to keep an eye open because as early as May 15 the restaurant will be open for limited hours, and “we’ll showcase a couple of our menu items each day,” Reiser said.

A failed proposal to eliminate the right of truste

A failed proposal to eliminate the right of trustees and mayors who serve more than five years to earn health benefits for life upon turning 55, and the removal of attorney Steven Leventhal from his post as special counsel to the Ethics Board, were hotly debated topics at the Southampton Village Board work session on Tuesday night, April 25.
Mayor Jesse Warren added the resolution to the agenda to revoke the right to medical and dental benefits for life for currently serving and future Village Board members, while allowing former trustees and mayors who had already earned that right to be grandfathered in and continue to keep those benefits.
Warren expressed his view that elected officials should not collect benefits for life and pointed out that the Village of Westhampton Beach had recently eliminated that right for elected officials, applauding it as the right thing to do.
He said it would be a cost-saving move for village taxpayers, pointing out that a family health insurance plan can cost around $40,000 per year.
Warren did not receive support from the four trustees seated to his right and left, and the resolution went nowhere. After the four trustees made it clear they did not support the resolution, Warren did not make a motion to approve it, and none of the trustees made a motion to table it for later consideration.

A Springs School robotics team and its club advisors are asking for the public’s help to raise $9,000 to send the Lightning Bots to the First Lego League Worchester Polytechnic Institute Open Invitational in Massachusetts this June.
“The First Robotics league was established by the creator of the Segway to give bright young individuals a head start in the coding and engineering sectors, which are very useful skills to have in a world that is increasingly reliant on technology,” Lightning Bots member Adrie Quinn said. “Although this seems like a lot of money, remember that this is an investment in our country’s future.”
Quinn is looking to attend the international competition with team members Austin Allen, Danny Chuya, Watts Comly, Josue Llivicota and Max Oransky. The $9,000, club co-advisor Erik Schwab said, would cover the registration fee, transportation, hotel expenses for students and their families and banners for the team, on which it plans to place sponsorship logos.
“This is important to us and our students … We honestly couldn’t be more proud and excited,” said Schwab.

On a typical weekday afternoon in early March, Joe Sanicola walked into the front door of his East Quogue home with 3-year-old son Teddy following closely behind. They had made a stop at the grocery store for a few things, and Teddy was particularly excited to show his mom, Liz Sanicola, an item he’d picked out, which he clutched in his small hands. He bounded into the kitchen, proudly displaying the square packet of pumpkin seeds, and was ready to head right out the back door and into the yard to plant them.
That Teddy picked out a packet of pumpkin seeds to take home is no surprise to anyone who knows the Sanicola family. Joe, who works as a teacher in the East Hampton School District, and Liz, who helps out with her family’s business, South Fork Asphalt, and also runs an Instagram account, hamptonshomestead, have made gardening and planting a way of life for their family, which includes daughters Lena, 11, and Maggie, 9, as well as sons Augie, 7, and Teddy, the youngest.

A Westhampton Beach Village Police officer carried

A Westhampton Beach Village Police officer carried a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, then overturned an SUV he was driving in the village and left the scene of the accident without promptly reporting it, according to a reprimand he received last year from Chief of Police Steven McManus.
The only citation he received from Village Police was for driving a vehicle with an expired registration.
Under a settlement agreement related to the incident, the village suspended Officer Connor Raynor for 30 days, without pay, and he forfeited 168 vacation hours and 12 compensatory hours — the equivalent of another 30 days of suspension.
Raynor and Mayor Maria Moore signed the agreement in March 2022, about four months after the accident occurred.
The Village Board appears to have approved the settlement at a meeting that was not announced to the media, in violation of the state’s Open Meetings Law — and video of the meeting is not available publicly.
The settlement came to light this week as a result of a Freedom of Information request that The Express News Group filed with the village this February seeking all police disciplinary records for the past two and a half years.
