A Beacon

The lighted lamp in the window of Canio’s has been a welcoming beacon since I first entered the Village of Sag Harbor in April 2022. I took note as we drove by on our way to the home on Palmer Terrace that my husband and I had recently purchased.

The following day, taking a break from unpacking yet another box, I retraced the path to the shop on foot and entered the enchanting world, Canio’s Books, where I have been introduced to the art of writing under the patient guidance of Maryann Calendrille. Maryann’s workshops have also been the source of new friendships among fellow aspiring writers, while the shop itself is a treasure trove of books.

The thought that the lamp will be extinguished saddens me [“Canio’s Books, Long a Sag Harbor Cultural Icon, Faces Uncertain Future as Lease Is Not Renewed,” 27east.com, March 20]. I hope that it will find another window on another Sag Harbor street upon which it will shed its light.
