A Little More Info

Thank you for the article “North Sea Maritime Center Will Use Gift To Launch Capital Drive” [27east.com, December 8], describing the recent progress of our organization, the North Sea Maritime Center. I would like to provide some additional contextual information and clarification on the funds expended by the Town of Southampton, the Community Preservation Fund and the State of New York Parks Department to date.

The funds identified in the article to purchase the “property” in 2003 are $3.15 million in CPF revenue. The “property” here consists of the entire 3.9-acre marina where Tupper Boathouse is located, not just the structure itself. The purchase was made to protect valuable estuarine space in the Cow Neck Target Preservation Area and ultimately to add the existing retail marina on the property to the Southampton Parks system for use of town residents.

The old Tupper Boathouse was slated for demolition until, in 2015, it was found to be historic by the Southampton Town Landmarks and Historic Districts Board. The Town of Southampton then applied for and received “Sandy” funds from the State Parks Department to harden the historic structure against future storm damage. So, of the $1.3 million invested so far by the town to restore the Tupper Boathouse, $855,000 was from grants.

Because Southampton Town, the Community Preservation Fund and New York State Parks Department have been so supportive, we want to ensure that they receive full attribution.

We are always available to discuss the North Sea Maritime Center and the Tupper Boathouse and look forward to providing further updates as the project progresses.
