A Look Back

The February 29 article by Michelle Trauring [“June Morris, Proprietor of the Penny Candy Shop, Remembered as Matriarch of Water Mill,” 27east.com, February 27] surely made the day: in the 36 years I have lived here, always passing the little Penny Candy Store and occasionally stopping in, to be instantly taken back to a simple time.

The graciousness of Harvey and June Morris was so genuine and a reminder of a long-gone past. A feeling that rarely exists here today with the “212” rude attitude that becomes more prevalent today. If only the walls could talk.

When I first moved here, it seemed everyone out here was like them, and now so few are left. As I started to read the story, it gave me a sense of warmth and an inner smile. Surely, these are pages that I will save. A treasured look back, for so many.

Thanks to The East Hampton Press for the pleasure of this look back.
