I was shocked and saddened to read that Canio’s in Sag Harbor has lost its lease [“Canio’s Books, Long a Sag Harbor Cultural Icon, Faces Uncertain Future as Lease Is Not Renewed,” 27east.com, March 20].
As a poet whose first book was published in 2002, I had the wonderful experience of reading from my work at the bookstore. Kathryn and Maryann have invited me many times over the years, and their support has meant so much to me.
Canio’s is a unique place with a warm, embracing atmosphere and an attentive, appreciative audience — a one-of-a-kind, intimate venue cherished by authors and artists, both famous and those just beginning their careers. As a cultural cafe, Canio’s offers art, photography, an amazing selection of books, and a deep spirit of community.
I truly hope that Canio’s will find another home soon in Sag Harbor.
