Alice Vera Darden
Alice Vera Darden died on January 23 at the Southampton home of her granddaughter. She was 101.
Born on August 31, 1911, in Drewyville, Virginia, to Willie Ben and Anne Wells Ford, she became a member of the Pleasant Plain Baptist Church in Drewyville, Virginia, at a young age. In 1928, she moved to Bridgehampton and married Harrison Darden Jr. on December 11, 1931. The couple had two sons and two daughters.
In 1935, she joined the First Baptist Church of Bridgehampton under the pastorate of the late Reverend Lawrence A. Jackson. She was a faithful member of the Senior Choir, the Senior Missionary, the Silver Leaf Club, the Deaconess Board and the Praise Team.
Ms. Darden is survived by her two sons, the Reverend Roosevelt Darden and wife Mary of Georgia, and Theodore Darden of Coram; a daughter, Frances Oliver of Brooklyn; 10 grandchildren, Alice Johnson of Southampton, Debbie Johnson, Barbara Leathers and Gail Spencer, all of Georgia, Patricia Samuels of Freeport, Myosha Hosier of Philadelphia, Alice Little, Andrea Oliver and Travis Oliver, all of Brooklyn, and Richard Turner of the Bronx; a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a godson, Ronald Darden of Pennsylvania; and many relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Harrison Darden Jr., and a daughter, Geraldine Johnson.
Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church of Bridgehampton on January 29; the Reverend Frank Bryant officiated. Interment was at Southampton Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
