In 2019, I opened a business in Westhampton Beach and required a change of use from the Building Department. From the moment I stepped foot in Village Hall, every single staff member conspired to help me with the application and explained, in great detail, the process before me and what to expect.
The tone of Village Hall in Westhampton Beach was noticeably different from other municipalities that I have worked in. It was clear that the mayor of Westhampton Beach, Maria Moore, understood that the culture of anything comes from the top and filters down.
Maria is collaborative, a straight shooter and a remarkable woman who listens to her constituents and finds a balance among their concerns. Anyone who reads The Southampton Press can tell you that this is something that is sorely lacking from Southampton Town Hall at the moment. Maria is a proven consensus builder, as evidenced by her actions throughout her nine years as mayor of Westhampton Beach.
Maria Moore is a master at crafting responsible budgets and has never raised taxes in the village beyond the 2 percent tax cap, having the reconstruction of Main Street paid for almost entirely by grants.
As my involvement in the Westhampton Beach community increased, I saw firsthand that Maria Moore is an effective, competent, even-tempered, transparent leader who respects her constituents. Among her numerous accomplishments, she spearheaded the redevelopment of Main Street and construction of Phase 1 of the sewer district. During her tenure as mayor, Maria made Westhampton Beach the destination for summer evening strolls, arts, dining and events in the Hamptons.
When my own business had its own grand opening, Maria Moore showed up to it, uninvited, to welcome me to the community, share her contact information and make sure that I heard it from her that she was there if I needed her. It was so clear that she cared about me as a contributing member of the village that I will never forget it.
I can only think of one person to take the reins from Jay Schneiderman, and that woman is Maria Moore.
