Arthur Benjamin Hull III

Arthur Benjamin Hull III, a longtime Southampton resident, died at home on Wednesday, April 10. He was 75.

Mr. Hull, known to family and friends as “Ben,” was born on April 20, 1937, to Virginia Reed Hull and Arthur B. Hull Jr. in Brooklyn. His family moved to Southampton from Bay Shore in 1959 and founded Hull Chevrolet-Olds. He graduated from Bay Shore High School, earned a bachelor’s degree from Williams College and served in the U.S. Air Force, achieving the rank of captain.

After his military service, he joined Hull Chevrolet-Olds on Hill Street in Southampton and became president and co-owner.

He met his wife, Kathleen Herbert Hull, at the Post House in Southampton and they were married in 1962. He was an avid golfer, tennis player, paddle tennis player, and skier (both downhill and cross country). He was a member of Southampton Golf Club, Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and a former member of the Southampton Bath and Tennis Club.

Mr. Hull was the great-great-grandson of Stephen Foster, considered by some to be the “father of American music.”

Mr. Hull was predeceased by his wife in 2012 and by one of his sons, Mark Hull. He is survived by four children, Arthur Hull and his partner Wayne Whipple of Boston, J. Geoffrey Hull of Southampton, Timothy Hull and wife Geraldine of Southampton, and Terrence Hull of San Francisco; and two granddaughters, Devon Kathleen and Peyton Susanna Hull. He is also survived by a sister, Gail Healy of Arizona, and a brother, Gary Hull of Sag Harbor and Florida.

Visitation was at O’Connell Funeral Home on Sunday, April 14 and a funeral service took place on April 15, also at the funeral home.
