Arthur Werner Price, longtime owner of Art’s Market, now Ted’s Market, in Southampton, died on November 26 in Spring Hill, Florida. He was 82.
Born on December 7, 1926, at Southampton Hospital to Arthur N. and Ada Belle Werner Price, he grew up in Noyac and Southampton. After graduating from Southampton High School in 1944, he served in the U.S. Navy as Quartermaster Third Class on minesweepers in the Pacific Ocean from 1945 to 1948.
Returning home from the Navy, he briefly worked for Val Schmidt at Val’s Market on Hampton Road. Mr. Price purchased the store and business in 1952, renaming it Art’s Market. He owned and managed the business until his retirement in 1983, at which time he sold the business to his brother-in-law, Theodore Anderson, who renamed it Ted’s East End Market. Mr. Price and his wife, June, raised their son and daughter at their home on Leo’s Lane in Southampton.
After retiring, he volunteered at Southampton Hospital, where he managed the gift shop in the 1980s. When he moved to Florida, he volunteered at Spring Hill Regional Hospital, where he amassed more than 6,000 hours as an emergency room volunteer.
He is survived by his daughter, Jamie Pelley of Spring Hill; his son, Lee Price and two grandchildren, Terrence and Laura Price, all of Runnemede, New Jersey; and a sister, Dorothy Scholl of Spring Hill and East Quogue. June Price, his wife of 53 years, predeceased him in 2004.
A funeral service was held at Brewer & Sons in Spring Hill on December 1. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to HPH Hospice, c/o Hospice Foundation, 12107 Majestic Blvd., Hudson, FL 34667 would be appreciated by the family.
