Barbara Ann Muller “Bam” Cancellieri, of Southampton, New York, passed away on March 30, 2025, at home surrounded by her immediate family. She was 91.

Bam was born and raised in Baldwin, New York to Arthur Stanley Muller and Olga Marie Nelson Muller on October 25, 1933. She graduated from Baldwin High School and worked for a short time as a secretary in Manhattan with her future sister-in-law Sheila Kerr (Muller) commuting to work on the LIRR.

Bam spent many childhood vacations at Roses’ Camps on the Mill Pond in Water Mill, New York. During this time, she met a local boy, Americo “Ric” Cancellieri of Southampton. Bam & Ric got married in Southampton on February 5, 1955, and spent their first year of marriage while Ric was stationed in the army in Tacoma, Washington where they had their first child, Karen.

Bam and Ric returned to Southampton to raise Karen. They continued to grow their family and eventually moved into the same house that Ric was born and raised. They would raise all of their children- Karen, Steven, Philip, Mark and Bill in this house and continued to enjoy their home for the rest of their lives.

A devout Catholic, Bam was involved in the Sacred Hearts Church of Southampton for many years helping with altar cleaning duties. She also worked at times in the family business at Cancellieri Pharmacy in Southampton Village as cashier, decorator and book-keeper. Bam & Ric loved playing golf and were members
of the Southampton Golf Club for many years along with great friends. Most vacation destinations revolved around golf outings, some of which included Bermuda, Puerto Rico and Pebble Beach, California. One of Bam’s more unique hobbies was that of “turtle hunting” which she started at the age of 5 at Mill Pond in Water Mill. The most prized catch would be the smallest turtle caught. This was a passion that Bam shared with her children and grandchildren for the ever-joyful outings in the row boats at Aunt Irene & Uncle Arties Lake (Lake Nowedonah aka Mill Pond). An-other favorite pastime was spending Easter, Thanksgiving and enjoying many wonderful sunsets in her second home in nearby Towd Point, Southampton, a lovely 1920s fisherman’s camp, “The Bayhouse” which she lovingly strived to keep in a bygone era style.

Bam was a loving wife, mother, grand-mother, great grandmother, aunt and friend to many. She was generous of herself to those in need, both charitably and with her time, giving rides and helping with shopping outings. She had high moral standards and lived by her convictions and set a good example to those who knew her. She will be greatly missed.

Bam is survived by her daughter Karen Gil (Richie), of Hampton Bays; her son Steven Cancellieri (Dean LaSasso) of Middlesex, NJ; Mark Cancellieri of Woodbridge, NJ; William “Bill” Cancellieri (Heidi) and their children Elliana and Quinn; her grandchild Daniel “Danny” Gil (Jenn); her grandchild Lisa Gil Luna (Walter); and her great-grand-children Lucas, Scarlett & Juliette. She is predeceased by her husband Americo and their son Phillip.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank her loving and dedicated caregivers who showed so much love and respect in her final days: Kerrie, Caresa, Maisie, and Dawn. They would also like to thank all those who shared their condolences.

The Bounty That Surrounds Us

When the Community Preservation Fund gets its well-earned accolades for the good it has done for the East End in the past quarter century, the focus often is on the preservation of land, keeping it from being developed and thus protecting the region from becoming too intensely suburban. Without question, that effort to maintain the region’s rural appeal is a significant, historic accomplishment. But sometimes we forget the importance of the CPF in keeping agriculture alive as a major contributor to the region’s agroeconomy, which has quality-of-life benefits of its own for both farmers and those who live among their ... by Editorial Board
