Barbara C. Proferes of Sag Harbor died July 2. She was 90.
She was born on October 6, 1929 in Southampton to Captain Cornelius Cosgrove III and Marian (Zelenski) Cosgrove.
She spent her teenage years in Daytona Beach, Florida, where her father was a ship builder during World War II. She graduated high school there.
After returning to Sag Harbor, she met her husband, Christy J. Proferes, a disabled World War II veteran, a double-amputee who relied on a wheelchair.
The couple owned and operated Christy’s Liquor Store at the intersection of Madison and Main streets.
According to family, they vacationed in Florida every year with their children; enjoyed boating and fishing throughout the East End Peconic waters; dined at Baron’s Cove and the Seaside with friends when they were young, and with their growing girls at Gosman’s in their retirement years. And of course, lunches once a week at John Ducks were a favorite.
She is survived by her daughters, Patty Proferes Lothian of Maryland and Sag Harbor and Ann Plucis of Denver, North Carolina; and two grandchildren, Rebecca and Robert. She was predeceased by her husband, Christy J. Proferes, who died in 2005; and her son Christy Proferes, who died in 1959 at the age of 10 after a short battle with cancer.
Services were held on July 6 at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Sag Harbor. Arrangements were entrusted to Yardley & Pino Funeral Home of Sag Harbor.
Donations in her memory to the Sag Harbor Volunteer Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 2725, Sag Harbor, NY 11963, would be appreciated by the family.
