Charlotte Joan Mitchell of Sag Harbor died on May 23 following a short battle with COVID-19. She was 78.
Ms. Mitchell wore many metaphoric hats over the course of her life, her family said. Daughter to George and Johanna, sister to George Jr & Billy, Wife of Robert Mitchell who predeceased her, mother to Robert, Steven, Elizabeth and Rachel. Grandmother to Robert, Andrew, Nathaniel, Hannah, Melissa, Chelsy, Sydney, Grace, Aiden and soon to be Great Grandmother.
Her life began in 1941 in Passaic, NJ where Charlotte attended School, hoping perhaps one day to become a nurse like her mother, Johanna. Her path took a turn in 1960, as she moved with her parents to Sag Harbor, NY where she met and married Robert Mitchell. Together they raised four children, all the while enjoying her passion and talent for tailoring and creative crafts.
As the children grew Charlotte went back to school and completed her Masters degree in Banking and Finance while employed at Bank of the Hamptons / Suffolk County National Bank.
After a few years she decided to join Southampton Lumber as the head of their accounting department where she remained, till she opened her own business, a bridal and formal wear shop in Southampton. She loved assisting couples with their special day, and had an immense talent altering wedding dresses to give brides the perfect fit.
She liked helping her community which was evidenced by her many, many years of involvement with the Boy Scouts as a Cub Scout Leader and the Southampton Town Kiwanis Club. Food baskets, fundraisers for needy families, camp for kids in need were just a few of the events where Charlotte was always ready to lend a helping hand.
Her counsel, humor and advice will be missed by family and friends as we try to cope with constructing a life in her absence. It was a pleasure having known her and we are poorer for the loss, not just one of us but all of us. May you rest easy Charlotte, we hope to meet again someday.
