Dennis James Smith of Hampton Bays died peacefully on February 22 in the hospital with his son, Jesse, and daughter, Alissa, at his side. He was 72.
He grew up in Freeport, but lived in Hampton Bays for his adult life. He owned his own business, Hampton Electric, and was a master electrician.
He was a talented musician and singer. He had a stoic demeanor, but according to his family came alive when he was singing and performing. His voice was a soulful force. He began singing in bands while he attended Freeport High School and continued performing in local bands throughout his life. His favorite thing to do, his family said, was to make music with his friends.
He was known for calling friends and family on their birthday or New Year’s Eve and leaving a musical message playing his harmonica or clarinet.
He enjoyed trail walking, sitting at the beach, being on a boat with friends and watching black and white movies. He was an enthusiast in the supernatural and unknown.
He is survived by his children, Alissa Green, and Jesse Smith; his grandson, Otis Green; his partner, Jane Friedman; and son-in-law, Ian Green.
A remembrance service will be held on Sunday, March 10, at Scott-Rothwell Funeral Home in Hampton Bays. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m., with a memorial service from 2-3 p.m.
