Disgraceful Vote

It was with sadness and barely controlled anger that I read Ed Romaine’s lament (thank you, sir) about the disgraceful vote by the Central Pine Barrens Commission to give Discovery Land the go-ahead for their filthy “Nitrogen Wonderland” theme park — sorry, golf course [“Q&A: Pine Barrens Commission Member Ed Romaine Calls East Quogue Resort The ‘Project That Did Not Want To Die,’” 27east.com, January 20].

I also appreciated East Quogue resident Michael Alestra’s letter [“A Sad Day,” Letters, January 21] pointing out Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman’s seeming complicity at every turn in helping Discovery Land move forward time after time after time, as well as Mr. Schneiderman’s astounding claim that getting this monstrosity built was (in Mr. Alestra’s words) “the will of the people.”

As Mr. Alestra correctly pointed out, East Quogue residents soundly defeated the referendum on incorporating, which, in my opinion, was a thinly veiled attempt by Discovery Land supporters to help the company gain further legal footholds.

Why any local official who sits on a commission whose express purpose is to protect the fragile ecosystem it gets its name from — and who has experienced firsthand the poisoning of our bay water, red and brown tides, fish die-offs, the destruction of the bay scallop population, etc. — would side against common sense preservation with a bullying, threatening, out-of-state billion-dollar company that likes to throw its weight and money around is beyond me.

Or maybe I just need to do the math.
