Vanessa Valadez, 35, of Riverhead, was sitting in a running car on Evergreen Road in Flanders on February 27 when a Southampton Town Police officer, part of an extra patrol deployed to check drug activity, approached, according to police. While speaking to her, the officer took note of classic signs of inebriation — slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, police said. She performed poorly on standard sobriety tests and was charged with felony-level DWI. The felony count is lodged if a driver has had an alcohol-related conviction any time in the previous 10 years.
