Edward John Ireton of Southampton died on July 9 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 83.
Mr. Ireton was born in Queens on June 13, 1937 to Dorothy Pilger Ireton and Edward John Ireton Sr.
He graduated from Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park in 1955 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York in 1959. He then joined the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant.
For the next 40 years, he worked as an independent insurance agent for the Ireton-Williams Agency, a family owned business. He was active in the local Kiwanis organization and was an avid gardener.
He is survived by his wife Barbara (Schneider); a daughter Dana and her husband Salvatore Ficara of Southampton; a son Edward III and his wife Laurie of East Setauket; four grandchildren, Edward IV, Andrew, Kelsey and Devin; and one great-granddaughter, Lily Grace.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 18, at the Brockett Funeral Home from 10 to 11 a.m., with a prayer service at 11 a.m. Arrangements are in the care of the Brockett Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be made to the Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton, Heart of the Hamptons in Southampton, or to a charity of one’s choice.
The family extends its thanks to the staff of Tony Brook Southampton Hospital, the staff at Westhampton Care Center, and especially to the palliative care group at Peconic Bay Medical Center.
