Edward William Hudson Jr. of Amitville and formerly of Quogue died on June 10, on his birthday, under hospice care in Melville. He was 82.
In 1938, Mr. Hudson was born in Brooklyn to Agnes and Edward Hudson.
He was raised in Hempstead and later Massapequa.
Post high school, Mr. Hudson joined the United States Marines Corps, in which he proudly served for four years as a lance corporal.
Upon his return from the armed forces, he married his high school sweetheart, Joan, who predeceased him.
The couple raised two sons, Edward William Hudson III and Christopher Hudson.
While they raised their boys in East Quogue among many of the homes Mr. Hudson built, and later Quogue, he worked as a contractor on the East End.
When he wasn’t working and spending time with family at home, in Lake George or on ski trips to Vermont, Mr. Hudson enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing, his family recalled. He ended his career at Liberty Iron Works in Southampton.
Mr. Hudson took great pleasure in his grandchildren, according to his family: Bailey Joan Hudson was born in 2008; Brady Christopher Hudson was born in 2009; and Harper Grace Hudson was born in 2013.
According to his family, Mr. Hudson was in awe of his grandkids and his chance to watch them grow. He could always be seen at their dance recitals and ball games and enjoyed catching sea robins with them on his boat (while dreaming of bass), or roasting marshmallows in their backyard, his family recalled.
Mr. Hudson could brighten up any room with his friendly and happy personality, and he most loved spending time with family and friends, family members recalled.
Fifteen years ago, Mr. Hudson felt he was blessed to have found another love and companion in Gerry Doherty, a lifelong friend. The couple resided in Amityville.
Trips to Florida, Rhode Island, Aruba and Massachusetts were some of the highlights of their retired years together, along with relaxing under the gazebo he proudly built, sitting in front of the fireplace or on their front porch, his family said.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Hudson was predeceased by his parents and his sister Dorris Siegman.
He is survived by his two sons and his daughter-in-law Tara Hudson; his three grandchildren; his sister Joan Schult of Florida; Gerry Doherty of Amityville; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Hudson’s name to the Hospice Care Network in Melville.
