Emily Bodenheimer
Emily Bodenheimer, a longtime resident of North Haven, died on August 5 at Eastern Long Island Hospital due to cardiac arrest following hip surgery. She had moved to Peconic Landing in Greenport 10 years ago and spent the last several years at The Shores, the facility’s nursing home.
During the final week of Emily’s life, a nurse quipped, “She is one-of-a-kind, quite a fashionista,” a description that perfectly captured her lifestyle. She never went to breakfast without her makeup.
Looking back on her life, Ms. Bodenheimer often said, “Nobody had more fun than I did.”
Fun started in her teen years learning to sail in Sayville and went on to include winters at her ski house in Vermont. Then there was the Sun and Surf Club, where she met Henry Meyenberg, who became her partner and the love of her life. More good times continued: early days singing around Bobby Van’s piano, the first New Year’s Eve at The American Hotel, and traveling; Paris, Key West and San Diego were among her favorite spots. She loved her home on Fresh Pond Road in North Haven with its inviting deck overlooking the tranquil pond. And she loved her faith.
She is survived by a long list of friends and relatives: Cathy Healy, her best friend, who she met freshman year at The Mary Louis Academy, the staff at The Shores, including Maureen Blattner, Claudette Welch, Nancy Staker and Denise Gillies. Other survivors include her niece and nephews, Sue, John and Skip; Jean Malthaner, husband of Ms. Bodenheimer’s late sister, Marilyn; brother-in-law, Bob Dempsey; and her sister, Arlene Ball Dempsey.
A funeral Mass was officiated by Fr. Tom Murray at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church in Greenport on August 8.
