Ernest H. Murphy Sr. of Southampton died January 16 at Southampton Hospital. He was 83.
Mr. Murphy was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, on August 5, 1932, to Wilbert and Lilly Bell Murphy. Survivors said he was a man that would give his opinion on any and everything about life.
He served in the U.S. Army and Merchant Marine from August 26, 1946, to October 19, 1951. Upon receiving an honorable discharge he moved to Brooklyn where he worked as a barber for a few years. He then moved his family to Southampton where he became a maintenance foreman and electrician at Southampton Hospital. He held that position for 35 years. Upon retirement he took up the hobbies of fishing and hunting. He would share his catches with all in the neighborhood.
Mr. Murphy was predeceased by his wife, Pearl Scott Murphy; his parents; a brother and six sisters also predeceased him.
He is survived by two sons, Ernest Jr. of Southampton and Douglas of Islandia; five grandchildren, Tiffanie, Eric, Thomas, Ernest and Lynn; two great-grandchildren, Tekyla and Demetrios; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth and Merrel Scott, both of Georgia; two special friends, Mildred Bings of Virginia and Jessie Wyche of Southampton; plus a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service was held at Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton on January 25 with the Reverend Albert Brown officiating. Interment with military honors followed at Calverton National Cemetery.
