Former Southampton resident Mary H. Greenhut died August 20 in Orlando, Florida, after a long illness. She was 83.
Ms. Greenhut was born in Siler City, North Carolina, on June 28, 1930, the daughter of Jesse Harris and Ida H. Harris. She graduated from Siler City High School and moved to Greensboro, where she attended the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. In 1952 she moved to Manhattan, where she became a secretary at Music Corporation of America. While working at MCA she was assigned to Johnny Greenhut, who formed his own management agency two years later and asked his soon-to-be wife to join him. The couple got married in Las Vegas in 1955. They managed Jayne Morgan, Peggy Cass, Carol Lawrence and the young Andy Williams, to name a few. Upon her husband’s death in 1960, Ms. Greenhut continued to manage the agency successfully for a couple more years until she sold it, leaving show business behind.
In 1973 she moved to Southampton, where she worked for Cunningham Insurance for more than 20 years. After retiring, in 2000 she moved back to Greensboro, where she attended and volunteered at Buffalo Presbyterian Church. She was recognized as the 2008 Woman of the Year by the congregation. She was an avid sports fan, going to New York Giants games including Super Bowl XXV. She also enjoyed watching tennis and golf.
Ms. Greenhut cared for many friends and family members during terminal illness and will be remembered for always putting others first, her family said.
She is survived by a son, James Greenhut and wife Joanne; stepson, Robert Greenhut and wife Ellen; a sister, Jackie H. Ellis; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three brothers, Charles L. Harris, Wallace M. Harris and J. Curtis Harris; and two sisters, Glenna H. Bradford and Bethel H. Daurity.
Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Siler City on September 21 at 2 p.m.
