Help When It’s Needed

It’s funny what one takes for granted. I always took it for granted that when I called 911 help would arrive. And it did.

It arrived with a young paramedic with a calm, reassuring demeanor. He asked the right questions and he sounded like he cared about my answers. It arrived with a pretty woman with long blonde hair who was riding in the ambulance — she was understanding, competent and matter-of-fact. The police officer who showed up was soft-spoken and gentle and listened.

They, and the group of volunteers who showed up for my family’s own personal emergency, reminded me of something that perhaps I had forgotten in this recent hectic time: a group of people who give of their own time and expertise, through the goodness of their heart, to help the rest of us get through our hard times. They are special and they set an example that we should all follow.

So, for all who offer a helping hand, and in particular to the East Quogue group, many thanks.
