Herman Douglas Beckwith, known as Doug, of Quogue died on December 15 at the Westhampton Care Center. He was 89.
Mr. Beckwith was born on June 23, 1924, to George C. Beckwith and Anna M. Raynor. He attended the Quogue Elementary School and Westhampton Beach High School, where he played football under coach Carl Hansen. He served four years in the U.S. Navy as an aviator machinist mate third class in the Atlantic theater. He owned and operated Beckwith Mower and Marine in Quogue. He haulseined off Moriches, fished cod commercially off Montauk and clammed around Quantuck Bay.
Mr. Beckwith was a member of the Qugoue VFW Post 5350, the Westhampton American Legion and served 65 years with the Quogue Fire Department.
He was predeceased by his wife, Helen Krupski, in 1995, and a brother Richard C. Beckwith in 1999.
Funeral services were private under the direction of the Follett and Werner Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach.
A memorial reception for family and friends was scheduled to be held at the Quogue VFW on Montauk Highway on Wednesday, December 18.
