It’s a Joke

We were sitting at Main Prospect Restaurant at 9 a.m. on Saturday with over 100 local people watching the basketball game, Southampton vs. Catholic Central. The players from Southampton, a public school, were all local kids who have been playing together for many years. The Catholic Central team is a private school where many of these players were recruited and given scholarships to play.

There should be two separate tournaments, one for public schools and the other for private schools. It’s tough to compete with private schools who offer many incentives to bring players to their school. This is not to say that Catholic Central wasn’t a talented team.

I am a former college player who is well aware of how recruiting works. I also coached high school basketball and coached an AAU basketball team, exclusively from players mostly from the East End. When other teams saw us play, I received many calls trying to recruit my daughter “to play for their team.” Good thing, I was the coach. LOL.

The Southampton public schools should be very proud of their season and if they work hard can be a force in next year’s state championship. And it’s a good chance they will compete against private schools.

It’s a joke!
