James Gillis Crowther of Naples, Florida, and a summer resident of Westhampton Beach, died on August 6, 2017. He was 83.
The youngest of seven children of Herbert and Rose Crowther, he was raised in Montclair, New Jersey, and spent summers in Westhampton Beach.
Together with wife, Joan, he raised a family in Essex Fells, New Jersey, and, more recently moved to Naples.
He was a graduate of Saint Peter’s University, served his country honorably, and then began his 35-year career as a New York Stock Exchange specialist.
Survivors said Mr. Crowther was a simple man—he loved the finest yet not the elaborate—a consummate gentleman with a calm style, warm wit and contagious laugh.
Predeceased by his son, Jonathan, he is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joan; and six children, Claire Haugh (Michael), James Jr. (Laurel), Colman (Sheri), Alexandra O’Neill (Blake), Alaine Roberts (Philip), Martin (Wendy); 20 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held August 9 at Church of the Immaculate Conception on Quiogue. A memorial gathering will be held in New Jersey this fall.
