Jean Burke of North Haven died on April 4 at her home. She was 83.
Born on July 17, 1932, in Manhattan, she was the daughter of Jessie (MacLean) Burke, a 1925 graduate of Southampton High School, and James A. Burke of Manhattan. Ms. Burke attended a Catholic elementary school and graduated from Cathedral High School in Manhattan in 1950 and from Queens College in 1954.
After four years working in children’s placement services, she was appointed as a parole officer by the New York State Division of Parole, retiring as an area supervisor after 35 years. As area supervisor, she headed a bureau of 50 officers who were responsible for the supervision of those paroled from New York Sate prisons.
While working full time, she attended Brooklyn Law School at night, graduated and was admitted to the bar in 1968. Her law studies were financed by the Federal Law Employment Assistance Program. She earned a master’s in law from New York University School of Law.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor.
