John Alphonse LaGrua of Hampton Bays died on September 7 at Southampton Hospital. He was 79.
Mr. LaGrua was born in Brooklyn. He graduated from Erasmus High School in Brooklyn and St. John’s University in Queens. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean war. He then moved to the Hamptons, where he worked as a carpenter and became well known in the community, becoming involved in the Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the American Legion. Mr. LaGrua was an active member of the Church of St. Rosalie and loved participating in the choir, his family said.
From his first marriage, he is survived by a son, John C. LaGrua of Hampton Bays, and a daughter, Cynthia Trotta of Connecticut. He was predeceased by his son William C. LaGrua. From his second marriage, he is survived by his daughters Joni A. LaGrua of Mastic Beach and Erica Burgess of Hampton Bays. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Jillian, Jenna, Jessica and Julia of Hampton Bays; Lauren, Kristine and Frederick Trotta Jr. of Connecticut; Evan and Juliana Iveschich of Mastic Beach; and Lisa and Alexsandra Burgess of Hampton Bays; as well as by six great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours were held at the J. Ronald Scott Funeral Home in Hampton Bays on September 10. A funeral Mass was said at the Church of St. Rosalie in Hampton Bays on September 11. Burial followed at Calverton National Cemetery.
