Joseph P. Butler
Joseph P. Butler of Southampton died on November 28 at the Hamptons Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing after a long illness. He was 78.
Mr. Butler was born in Southampton to John and Elizabeth Butler. He was a graduate of Bridgeport University and received his master’s degree at Stony Brook University. He went on to teach at William Floyd High School and then at Remsenberg/Speonk Elementary School.
A prolific swimmer, he was a well-known ocean lifeguard for four decades. An enthusiastic athlete, he played basketball, baseball and football in both high school and college. He was known for his quick wit and friendly disposition.
He is survived by his wife, Connie; four children, Tom of Florida, David of Italy, Bryan and Beth of Southampton; and four grandchildren, Mark, Colin, Dakota and Jade.
A funeral service will be held at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Roman Catholic Church on Thursday, December 1, at 11 a.m.
