Scallop Season Goes Down In Flames

Scallop season is a bust. All the rumors were correct. There was a massive die-off of the adult scallops. Locally, there were no scallops — with catches ranging from zero to a few dozen. There were no boats working the bays in Sag Harbor or Noyac. There were a few more scallops from the North Shore, but it still amounted to only a few pounds. The scarcity is reflected in the price, which is $70 a quart. There were some juvenile scallops caught in the dredges, but who knows if they will survive to spawn next year.
