Former Sag Harbor resident Julius Van Kovics of Port Charlotte, Florida, died on February 20 at the Douglas Jacobson Veterans Nursing Home in Port Charlotte. Known to many as “Van,” he was 88.
Born on December 4, 1921, in Easton, Connecticut, he served in World War II as a member of General Patton’s 3rd Army during the drive across France in 1944.
Mr. Kovics, along with his wife, Jane Kovics, and son Jack Kovics, was the proprietor of Harbor Heights Service Station. He was a lifetime member of the Sag Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, serving the village until his retirement to Port Charlotte, Florida in 1995.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jane Kovics of Florida; two sons, Jack Kovics and his wife Sue of Sag Harbor and Jim Kovics and his wife Sarah of Utah; and a grandson, Chris Kovics of Oyster Bay.
A memorial service, set to be held in Sag Harbor, will be announced in a future edition of The Press.
