Just Say No

Perhaps it is time that Southampton Town legislated change instead of increasing fees [“Town Board Eyes Paid Permit For Residents Who Recycle At Southampton Transfer Stations,” 27east.com, December 9].

How much money would be saved if the town no longer collected leaves, yard waste, tree stumps, etc.? See the article about how yards should be managed: Everything is kept on site. This is how we save money and ourselves in one go.

A side benefit would be the ability to reduce the amount of funds spent on code enforcement. Neighbors would have less reason to complain, thus increasing the sense of community. Imagine the renewed peace and quiet. No more leaf blowers.

Please respond by showing the actual budget for yard waste management versus the cost of managing recycling.

On a personal level, I simply object to being made to pay for others’ profligate lifestyles. I take one bag of trash to the transfer station every other week. I compost most kitchen waste. My kitchen is virtually plastic-free, leaving only cans, bottles and cardboard. More robust composting can likely take care of some of the cardboard.

In Europe, I believe they are forcing the manufacturers of packaging to pay for its reuse and disposal. This, of course, has them all looking for better products and practices.

This is another “just say no” moment.
