For many, the Long Island Elite Meet at St. Anthony’s High School in Huntington on Saturday was officially the final meet of the winter season, while for some, it was their final tune-up before the New York State Indoor Track and Field Championships, which are this Saturday at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island.
Lily Strebel did not reach the state meet, but made the best of her final race. The Westhampton Beach freshman won the freshman/sophomore 1,600-meter race in 5:02.60, beating out West Babylon sophomore Alejandra Garcia by about six seconds. Strebel set a new freshman record in the race, topping Jackie Amato’s previous record of 5:06.09 from 2018.
Strebel also ran in the 4x800-meter race with Oona Murphy, Jamie Kelly and Rose Hayes, which placed fourth in 10:30.09. Hayes finished ninth overall in the 1,000-meter race in 3:19.69.
Each Westhampton Beach boy that competed at the elite meet will be competing at states this weekend. Colbie Mason placed second in the pole vault, clearing 13 feet 6 inches. Gavin Ehlers placed second in the 1,000-meter race in 2:31.59, finishing .22 of a second behind Deer Park’s Aidan Neilson. And Max Haynia (4:29.47) and Trevor Hayes (4:29.91) finished second and third, respectively, in the 1,600-meter race.
Southampton’s Harrison Gavalas finished fourth in the 300-meter dash in 37.14 seconds. He also competed in the 55-meter dash, where he finished 14th in 6.88 seconds. Billy Malone finished fifth in the 1,000-meter race in 2:39.36. William Ouzounian finished 12th in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet 8 ½ inches. Timothy Kraycar also competed in the shot put and finished sixth with a throw of 42 feet 11 inches.
Southampton’s Bridget Ferguson did not compete at the elite meet but she will compete in the high jump at states.
