M. “Edith” Mantaski of Westhampton Beach died at the Hamptons Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Southampton on September 22. She was 90.
Born in Port Jefferson, she was the daughter of Jane Griffin and Alvin B. Miller. She moved to Westhampton Beach with her family in 1931 when she was 8. She remained at the same residence on Mill Road for 82 years.
During World War II, Ms. Mantaski worked at the Greenport Shipyard performing various duties. After the war she worked at Hulse Brothers Laundry, now Strebel’s Laundry. She also cleaned houses for several families in the area. She was last employed at the Westhampton Library, before retiring. In her spare time, she enjoyed having yard sales, going to yard sales and playing bingo. She was also a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Beach United Methodist Church for more than 67 years.
Ms. Mantaski was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Stanley J. Mantaski; and siblings, Louis Miller, Bernard Miller, Gerald Miller and Edward Miller, all of Port Jefferson, and Mabel Ball of West Sayville. She is survived by two sons, Robert S. Mantaski of Castleton, Gary M. Mantaski of Westhampton Beach and daughter-in-law Sharon I. Mantaski, who helped care for her for the last 10 years. She is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service will be held at the Calverton National Cemetery at a later date.
