Some people swim in the ocean to start their day, others swim to end it. The ocean is a luxury for most, a way of life for a few. In seaside towns, we know about the ocean’s soporific gander, and so, too, its erosive intent. It is never the same and wholly indifferent. It does not matter how good a swimmer you are, it is not advised to swim in rough seas — and yet we do. A current is ripping down the shore; only one person is near the water, a skinny boy in a wetsuit. As he wades ... 14 Sep 2021 by Marilee Foster
It seems strange — no, it seems just plain wrong — that I am wearing a mask more now than I did three months ago. Did any of us really envision, when 2021 began, that nine months later the U.S. would be having over a thousand people a day dying from COVID-19? And with vaccines readily available? Let me reassure my conservative friends about a few things. One, I’ve never liked wearing a mask, and it’s not any more enjoyable to do so now than it was a year ago. Two, I don’t agree with mask mandates, because they divide ... 13 Sep 2021 by Tom Clavin
With the average price of a house in Suffolk County having now gone up to $525,000 — and the mean price in the Hamptons to $1.4 million — the affordable housing situation in the county has become yet more of a predicament for so many people. “The need for affordable housing has reached crisis proportions,” the county government’s affordable housing website declares. What is being done, what has been done, to deal with this crisis? A program that would help the East End is the Peconic Bay Region Community Housing Act, which for a second time has passed the New ... by Karl Grossman
By Jim Marquardt A south shore beach on the other end of Long Island kept me in pocket money for many years. I carried heavy, wood-framed beach chairs for summer visitors, and, finally, while in college, I roasted on a lifeguard stand. Recently, I came across a book titled “Waves and Beaches: The Powerful Dynamics of Sea and Coast,” by Willard Bascom and Kim McCoy, and I decided I was long overdue learning more about the world that provided me with early income and enjoyment. Waves and beaches are why you are here on the East End, even if you ... 8 Sep 2021 by Jim Marquardt
Here, what remained of the hurricane was a violent squall that lasted all night. One living in traditional quarters cannot sleep because storms like this are so loud. Roofs under watery assault are but drums for the tempest to paddle upon, and she does. All night she works to remind you who is boss. The bigger storm may fall apart, but slivers of her system stay intact, and so, shrapnel-like, she scatters destruction across a region, until the skies cleared and the temperature dropped. A clean north wind blew, and September, with her high-ceiling clouds and migrating monarchs, began, but ... by Marilee Foster
“Welcome to Suffolk County’s affordable housing website. The need for affordable housing has reached crisis proportions throughout the county.” Those are the opening lines of Suffolk County government’s website involving affordable housing here. Indeed, it is a crisis! When we purchased our first house in Suffolk County, in 1964, in Sayville, the price was $19,000 (a little less than $168,000 in 2021 dollars). And there were plenty of houses at the time up for sale in the $15,000 to $17,000 range. But we opted for a roomier place to raise our family after renting for three years (initially, a cottage ... 6 Sep 2021 by Karl Grossman
When my granddaughter came to visit from Florida recently, she decided she was ready for driving lessons. In Florida, she can get a learner’s permit and drive with a licensed driver at 15. Lucy will be 15 right after Thanksgiving. My husband, Mick, is the most patient person in the world and is an ideal teacher. Luckily, we live on a secluded circle with few cars and little traffic. Here, Lucy practiced parking, steering, three-point turns and reversing. Her friends in Florida were jealous of her driving lessons. The week after Lucy left, her cousin Cullen, also 14, visited from ... by Joanne Pateman
