Mustapha Kahia of Southampton died at Southampton Hospital on January 26, of a heart attack. He was 52.
Mr. Kahia was born in Casablanca, Morocco, and raised in Marrakech. He started his film career as an assistant cameraman at age 20 and traveled the world extensively. His credits include “Gandhi,” with Ben Kingsley; “Jewel of the Nile,” with Michael Douglas; “Rollover,” with Jane Fonda; and Bernardo Bertolucci’s “The Sheltering Sky.”
He met Tina Tomczyk, owner of Odyssey South Boutique in Southampton, in Morocco in 1986. After he emigrated to the United States, they married in 1987. For 22 years, they ran the store and traveled all over the world. Family members said this week that he was a well-liked and well-known member of the community
Mr. Kahia is survived by his wife, Tina Tomczyk Kahia; his father, Haje Lachen Kahia; a sister, Aicha Kahia of Salisbury, North Carolina; and three sisters in Morocco.
According to Mr. Kahia’s wishes, he was buried in Marrakech, Morocco, next to his mother.
A memorial service is being planned for a future date.
