Southampton School District Senior Tonoa Pender has been recognized by the Rotary Club of Southampton as the Rotary Student of the Month for December. She earned the honor for her dedication to her studies and school community. She is the treasurer of the Rotary Interact Club and a member of the Spanish and National honor societies. Hayground School Students in Marybeth Pacilio’s and RJ Partington’s class took turns teaching the class about different aspects of slavery that they researched in small groups. Their focus has been on the origins, the middle passage, and the impact that slavery had on families and the lives of children in particular. Students have also been reading selected excerpts from Jules Lester’s “To Be A Slave.” It is a collection of first-person narratives of those who were enslaved.
