No Compromise

Repeatedly complaining to the Town of East Hampton about airport noise has, understandably, provided little or no relief [“Express Sessions: Panelists Discuss The Future Of The East Hampton Airport,” 27east.com, March 24]. We’ve been hearing (for a decade) that funding and agreements made with the Federal Aviation Administration allows the town to do little.

Flying “over water” is absurd, since you must fly over land first. That’s the problem, and changes to flight patterns only move the noise issue to another area.

“Good faith” agreements with pilots in the past also have been useless. The idea of a 9 p.m.-to-7 a.m. curfew is also absurd, since, as was pointed out in a letter last week, that’s when the flights already occur. Seriously?

Those pushing to keep the airport operating are offering empty solutions and alternatives which have not worked during the past decade. The dire prognostications by the East Hampton Alliance, that our economy will fall apart and we’ll lose options for medical care, ring hollow.

Compromise will not work. The only true solution to the noise and pollution (not to mention the danger) is to close the airport.
