No Worries

This past week, I was scheduled to travel to Jones Beach to receive my first shot of COVID-19 vaccine. In all honesty, I was relieved to be scheduled for the shot — one of the few times when age has worked in my favor — but apprehensive, not about the injection itself but about the inevitable long lines and delays just to get to the testing site, surely to be followed by additional problems once there. So much so that I packed supplies that I would normally take on an overnight camping trip.

Well, I needn’t have worried! The mid-morning trip from Quogue to Jones Beach via the Sunrise Highway to Exit 41 (Robert Moses Causeway) was traffic free, and the ride along the Causeway and Ocean Parkway was beautiful. Best of all, none of my worst fears about the site itself was realized. Far from it.

Traffic flow through the four steps — appointment verification, paperwork, inoculation, and, finally, a 15-minute adverse reaction hold — were quickly and professionally orchestrated by a large and incredibly friendly staff.

Bottom line: Congratulations to those who selected this perfect offseason location for the testing, as well as to the terrific staff on duty in very cold weather.

Now, if only the federal government could provide enough vaccine to meet the demand of fellow Long Islanders, we could all enjoy a very special summer in our little corner of paradise!
