author on Jan 4, 2011

Robert Blake Davis

Robert Blake Davis died at his home in Quogue on December 25. He was 86.

Known affectionately as “Bob,” he was born to Edward and Cecilia Davis and raised in South Orange, New Jersey. The family spent summers in their home, “Old Trees,” in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

Mr. Davis attended Seton Hall Prep then went on to Stevens Technical Institute. He joined the U.S. Navy, was sent to study engineering at Dartmouth College and graduated from Worchester Poly-Tech in 1946. He became an officer in the Navy before he graduated.

He joined his father and older brother in the family printing company, Davis-Delaney, eventually became president of the business, from which he retired at the age of 71. Early in his career he was voted president of the New York Printing Association.

He married Anne Hogan and the couple raised six children in Purchase. Every summer was spent with his family in Quogue, where he was one of the original owners of the Surf Club of Quogue, serving on its board of directors until his death, and helped found a scholarship fund for college-bound employees. He loved golf, and was a member of Apawamis Golf Club and enjoyed playing at Mariner Sands in Stuart, Florida, where he and his wife had spent the past seven winters. He continued his passion for golf and fellowship each summer at the Westhampton Country Club, where he helped found the now annual Super Senior Golf Tournament. He was also a former member of the board of trustees at The Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Family said he will be missed for his warm smile, sense of humor, and generous spirit.

Mr. Davis is survived by his wife of 54 years, Anne Davis; six children, Suzanne Cincotta and Mary Stanton of Connecticut, Bob Davis Jr. of Harrison, Patricia Verrochi of Mount Kisco, Jack Davis of Huntington, and Ted Davis of Manhattan; and 16 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his three brothers, Ted, Tom, and Jack.

Visitation was held at the Graham Funeral Home in Rye, on Monday, January 3. A funeral Mass was held on January 4, at Saint Paul’s Church in Greenwich.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider a donation to Holy Cross Church, 329 West 42nd Street, New York, NY 10036.
