Rodman U. Smith
Rodman Una Smith of Quiogue died on April 14 at the age of 87.
Born in Brooklyn on February 27, 1925, he was the first of two sons of James Theodore and Grace Una Smith. He graduated from Great Neck High School in 1943. A talented ice skater, Mr. Smith performed professionally in Sonja Henie’s 1942-43 “Stars on Ice” at Rockefeller Center. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943 and was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of corporal in the 513 Bomb Squad, 376 Bomb Group. His specialty was airplane armor and he had earned a Good Conduct Medal.
A postwar graduate of Adelphi University in 1948, he retired after 36 years of service with New York Life, as group vice president.
According to survivors, he was a devoted husband and father. He loved the beach and boating the waters of Long Island’s East End.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 46 years, Joyce Galbraith Smith. He is survived by his brother, William Scott Smith; a son, William Galbraith Smith; a daughter, Brooke Smith DiCapua, a son-in-law, Lawrence Herrick DiCapua; and two grandsons, Henry and Blake DiCapua.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 2, at 11:15 a.m., at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Westhampton Beach.
