Sandra Jeannette Best of Southampton died after a brief illness at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, where she was a resident, on August 16. She was 75.

She was born on June 4, 1948, in Southampton, to the late Helen D. Collins and William T. Collins.

A native of Southampton, she attended and graduated from the Southampton High School. After graduation, she attended Morgan State University in Baltimore, where she met and married Roger Lee Jones. They had three children, Jeannette Helene, Roger Kyle and Edward Linwood.

While in Southampton, she worked at the Bridgehampton National Bank for many years before transitioning to the Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where she retired as a medical records clerk.

She was a faithful and dedicated member of the First Baptist Church of Bridgehampton, where she was a member and chaplain of the choir. She was affectionately called “Bishop” because of her anointed prayers. “While her presence seemed quiet and reserved,” her family said, “one thing we know for sure is that she knew and loved the Lord.”

Her favorite pastime was spending time in church and being with family and friends. She enjoyed watching game shows and reality television shows. She also enjoyed helping others in whatever capacity they needed, whether she knew them personally or not.

She was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her children, Jeannette Jones (Kazeem Yusuf) of Baltimore, Roger Jones (Josephine Scott) of Augusta, Georgia, Eddie Jones of Bellport; nephews, William T. Collins III (T-Bone) of Cutchogue and Tygue Collins of Farmingville; grandchildren, Heather Robinson of Pikesville, Maryland, Vashon Robinson of Baltimore, Tracy Mitchell Jr. of Baltimore, Alasijah Jones of Patchogue, Isaijah Jones of Eastport, Roger Jones Jr. of Augusta, Georgia and John Deboe of Coram; great-grandchildren, Victoria Robinson, Lilly’aunna Mitchell, Kay’Lonnie Mitchell, and Kaishon Robinson, all of Baltimore; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

A home-going service was held on August 28 at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. The Reverand Henry Faison Jr. of the First Baptist Church of Southampton was the officiant. Interment followed at Southampton Cemetery.

Still Alive

Now come the shortest days, and we offset the long nights with lights and little candles everywhere. In a show of determination and defiance, decor is how we get through the darkest days merrily. I do not rationalize the need to decorate, and I do not fight the urge. Instead, I consider what is durable and plentiful. If I hang it from a bespoke wire hook, will people grasp the symmetry and austere beauty? Will they flock to my booth at the craft market? We had a bumper garlic crop. And sales were slack. So, going into soup season, we’ve ... by Marilee Foster

I write in reference to an article published by 27east.com dated December 6 [“Southampton Village Ethics Board Finds Trustee Robin Brown Violated Code With Attendance at Fundraisers”], regarding a decision by the Southampton Village Ethics Board erroneously finding that I violated the village’s code of ethics by attending two fundraisers.
