To raise autism awareness, Hampton Bays High School Life Skills students created beautiful mixed media works of art that are being displayed in the Helen Gould room at the Hampton Bays Public Library during the month of April. Art therapy has been shown to benefit individuals with autism and other disabilities by promoting self-esteem, building fine-motor and problem-solving skills, enhancing communication and serving as an important outlet for self-expression. The students performed four musical selections and were adjudicated on overall sound, as well as appearance. Hampton Bays Elementary School students in Amy McNamara's and Morgan Tiska's class, including Valentina Guevara and Mathias Herbel-Monsalve, recently created book jackets and book reports as part of a historical fiction unit. After reading a work of historical fiction, the students wrote a summary and provided information on the characters and the work’s historical context. To complete their reports, they enclosed them in book jackets that they had illustrated. They also presented their projects and made book recommendations to their classmates.
